Erdogan decreased the independence of the Central Bank and pursued a highly unorthodox monetary policy, significantly contributing to a currency and debt crisis starting in 2018.

His decision caused a significant decline in his popularity and is widely believed to have contributed to the 2019 local elections results, in which his party lost power in Ankara and Istanbul to opposition parties for the first time in 15 years.
