He also took part in the 4 200 m and 4 100 m relay races for Newman. Beckham grew up playing soccer and idolizing David Beckham, an English player.

The coaches at Beckham’s soccer club offered him the chance to try out for a junior national team program, but he declined because he did not want to spend the necessary time abroad given his talent in other sports back home.

Rivals.com and Scout.com both rated Beckham as the No. 6 wide receiver and No. 40 player in the country, respectively. He chose Louisiana State University over scholarship offers from schools such as Ole Miss, Nebraska, Tulane, and Tulsa, among others (LSU). He also competed in the US Army All-American Bowl in 2011.
