Following the commercial failure of Emotions, Carey’s subsequent release was to be marketed as adult contemporary and pop-friendly.

Carey and Afanasieff produced Music Box, which launched a songwriting collaboration that lasted until 1997’s Butterfly. On August 31, 1993, the album was released to mixed reviews from music critics.

Merry Christmas, which was released on November 1, 1994, became the best-selling Christmas album of all time, selling over 15 million copies worldwide.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the lead single, became a holiday standard and continues to be popular each holiday season.

Carey’s subsequent musical releases continued the trend started by Daydream. Her music began to rely less on pop and adult contemporary-tinged balladry and more heavily on hip-hop and R&B.

Carey left Columbia Records after receiving the Billboard Artist of the Decade Award and the World Music Award for Best-Selling Pop Female Artist of the Millennium. In April 2001, she signed an unprecedented $100 million five-album recording contract with Virgin Records (EMI Records).

The Emancipation of Mimi, Carey’s tenth studio album, was produced by the Neptunes, Kanye West, and Carey’s longtime collaborator, Jermaine Dupri.

Mariah Carey began work on her eleventh studio album, E=MC², in a private villa in Anguilla in early 2007.
