Lewis Black Bio

Lewis Black was born in Washington DC on the 30th of August 1948 to Sam Black (father, mechanical engineer and artist) and Jeanette Black (mother, teacher). He grew up in Silver Spring Maryland and attended Springbok High School, where he graduated in 1966.

Black was a Class A student who exceptionally did well in math. Young Lewis Black fell in love with theater at the age of 12 after seeing his very first theatrical performance. From that point on, the young man cultivated the ambition to make a career on the stage.

He began his higher education at the University of Maryland before transferring to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he received his first degree in dramaturgy. Black earned a master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama in 1977.

Lewis Black moved to New York where he began work as a playwright at the West Bank Cafe owned by Steve Olsen. He was involved in the creation and development of several plays including West Wing and American Beauty which were the original works by Aaron Sorkin and Alan Ball. He wrote the musical drama The Czar of Rock ‘n’ Roll and performed a brief stand-up before the start of each theatrical performance -comedy on. He finally left the West Bank Cafe in the early ’80s and pursued a full-time career in comedy.

Lewis Black landed film roles in movies like Hannah and Her Sisters in 1986 and Jacob’s Ladder The King of Rant then exploded when he guest-casted as a guest commentator on a hilarious re-enactment of The Daily Show. His dark, angry humor enlivened the rant on societal issue and world leaders blew audiences away. Following his success on The Daily Show, he has appeared in numerous stand-up comedy specials, including Black on Broadway in 2004 and Red, White and Screwed in 2006.
