Dach was born to Dale Dach and Hillary Dach. He shares the same parents with his brother, Colton Dach who is also an ice hockey forward with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League as a prospect of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Dach stands at a height of 1.93m tall and weighs 90kg. Details about his educational background is not known to us at the time of filing this report.

In the 2016 Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft, the Saskatoon Blades picked Dach with the second overall pick. He scored 10 points while playing in 19 games. For the 2017–18 season, Dach became a full-time member of the Blades. He scored seven goals and had 39 assists in 52 games.

Dach was selected as the Blades’ alternate captain for the remaining portion of the season in January 2019. He was chosen as Team Orr’s captain for the NHL Top Prospects Game. Team Cherry was defeated 5-4 by Team Orr, with Dach contributing one assist. In 62 games, he scored 25 goals and had 48 assists for a total of 62 points.

Dach was chosen by the Chicago Blackhawks as the third overall pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Dach was ranked third among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting Services (CSS). On July 8, he agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the team.

Kirby Dach career

After training camp, Dach joined the Blackhawks and promptly started his professional playing career. On October 20, 2019, he faced the Washington Capitals in his NHL debut. On October 22, during a 2-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, Dach scored his first NHL goal.

Dach had 8 goals and 15 assists in 64 games for the 2019–20 NHL season, which was cut short by the pandemic. His point total was comparable to that of Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko, the two players selected before him in the draft.

The 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs were rescheduled for later in 2020, to be played out in a bubble format in Toronto and Edmonton, in the thick of the epidemic. Dach re-joined the Blackhawks for a qualifying round game against the Edmonton Oilers on their home ice, where the Oilers were seen as the favorites because they finished second in the Pacific Division at the end of the regular season.

In a best-of-five series, the Blackhawks pulled off an upset by defeating the Oilers in three games to one. In the first three games of the series, Dach recorded four assists, earning him recognition as one of the team’s greatest players.

In the first-round matchup with the Golden Knights, the Blackhawks won, and on August 13, Dach scored his first playoff goal in his career. He became the first teenager to do so since Jeremy Roenick in 1989 and the sixth youngster to score a playoff goal for the Blackhawks.

After sustaining a wrist injury during the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, Dach missed a significant portion of the NHL season in 2020–21. On March 27, 2021, he joined the Blackhawks once more. Dach made 18 appearances and recorded two goals and eight assists. He suffered a recurrence of his wrist ailment and missed the season’s final three games.

In the middle of a dismal season for the Blackhawks that saw a complete change in management, Dach returned to the lineup full-time in the 2021–22 season, although he struggled to contribute. In 70 games, he only scored 9 goals and recorded 17 assists, and he also had trouble winning faceoffs.

Dach was dealt by the Chicago Blackhawks to the Montreal Canadiens on July 7, 2022, at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for the thirteenth overall pick and a third-round pick.

In order to complete the transaction, the Canadiens had to exchange defenseman Alexander Romanov for the thirteenth overall pick from the New York Islanders. General manager Kent Hughes had stated that he thought Dach could fulfill his potential despite his previous problems.

Dach and the Canadiens agreed to a four-year, $13.45 million deal on September 7, 2022. On October 17, they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 thanks to Dach’s first goal for the squad in overtime.

Dach was selected for Team Canada in 2018 for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he contributed to 5 goals and 2 assists over the course of 5 games. Dach scored a goal in the first period of Team Canada’s gold medal match against Sweden to lead the team to a 6-2 triumph.

He was given by the Blackhawks as a loan to the Canadian team competing at the 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where he later assumed the captaincy. Dach collided with Russian forward Ilya Safonov on December 23 during Team Russia’s only pre-tournament game against Canada.

Dach was hurt enough by the collision to leave the game right away and never come back. Dach would be forced to sit out the remainder of the competition due to a wrist fracture, according to X-rays taken afterward.
