Hood-Schifino committed to play for Jeff Capel and Pittsburgh while attending the Combine Academy. At the time, the Panthers’ acquisition of Hood-Schifino, a Pittsburgh native, was regarded as a significant recruiting success.

However, Hood-Schifino decided to restart his recruitment after his second year in high school. Only a few months after taking over as head coach in Bloomington in the summer of 2021, the Indiana Hoosiers got involved in Hood-Schifino’s recruitment.

In August 2021, Hood-Schifino made a commitment to the Hoosiers. He was the ninth-highest-ranked recruit for the team since 1998 and the highest-rated recruit to sign with the Hoosiers since Romeo Langford in 2018.

A mock NBA draft predicted Hood-Schifino would be selected in the first round before his freshman season with the Hoosiers. He was selected the league’s top preseason rookie by a group of Big Ten reporters.

Hood-Schifino was recognized by coaches and media as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and third-team All-Big Ten in his lone season at Indiana.

He played 33.1 minutes per game in 32 games (32 starts), averaging 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists.

Hood-Schifino recorded the most points by an Indiana freshman since Eric Gordon against Chattanooga in 2007 when he scored 33 points on January 8, 2023, in an 84-83 loss to Northwestern at Assembly Hall.

Hood-Schifino set a freshman record for Indiana on February 25, 2023, scoring 35 points in a 79-71 victory over Purdue at Mackey Arena.

Hood-Schifino gave notice of his intent to enter the NBA draft on March 31, 2023, bypassing his remaining three years of college eligibility.

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Jalen in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft, 17th overall.
