Dwayne Johnson (born May 2, 1972) is an American actor, film producer, and retired professional wrestler better known by his ring name the Rock. Widely recognized as one of the best professional wrestlers of all time, he was instrumental in the creation and success of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) during the Attitude Era, the late 1990s and early 2000s industry boom period.

Johnson wrestled for the WWF for eight years before moving on to acting. His films have grossed more than $3.5 billion in North America and more than $10.5 billion globally, making him one of the world’s highest-grossing and highest-paid performers.

Dwayne Johnson attended the Democratic National Convention in 2000 as part of WWE’s non-partisan “Smackdown Your Vote” initiative to encourage young people to vote. He also spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2000.

In both the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, Johnson supported Barack Obama. He did not vote in the 2016 election, and as of 2017, he is an independent voter. He supports Joe Biden for President in 2020. Johnson has stated his desire to run for president, telling USA Today in February 2021, “I would consider a presidential run in the future if that’s what the people wanted.”

Following an online poll that found 46% of Americans would consider voting for Johnson in a presidential election, he stated on The Today Show on April 12, 2021, “I do have that goal to unite our country, and I also feel that if this is what the people want, then I will do that.”

Johnson established the Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation, a nonprofit that works with at-risk and terminally sick children, in 2006. On October 2, 2007, he and his then-wife, Dany Garcia, contributed $1 million to the University of Miami to help with football facility renovations. The Hurricanes’ locker room was renamed in Johnson’s honor by the institution.

Johnson gave $1,500 to a GoFundMe campaign in 2015 to pay for an abandoned dog’s surgery. He gave $25,000 to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in 2017. Johnson gave a gym to a military facility on Oahu, Hawaii, in 2018. Following the 2018 Hawaii floods, he collaborated with Malama Kauai, a nonprofit organization, to assist with flood damage restoration. Johnson has also collaborated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation on several occasions.

During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, Johnson gave a seven-figure payment to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, which foundation president Courtney B. Vance described as “the largest single donation that (the foundation) has ever received from one individual at one time.
